Unfortunately I haven’t continued my adventure in making sports bra, but during my ‘research’ (googling) I came upon this blog post by Katherine. In the post, she has made various types of sports bra prototypes, and one of them was made with Merckwaerdigh BHS10 that I happen to have.

I followed Katherine’s lead and modified the pattern so the edges are finished with elastics rather than stretch lace. The fabric is grey jersey with green color on the wrong side, leftover from my Plantain top. The edges are finished with fuchsia plush elastic.

My version is not a sports bra though because it doesn’t offer enough support. I prefer sports bra with underwire like the Panache bra that I dissected the other day. This softbra is great for sleeping or lounging at home. They are very comfortable!

  1. What an interesting bra design. I’ve looked that one over in her shop before, but didn’t see the version with the powerbar on the side. I really like what you did with yours. I’m deep in the middle of drafting my own bra pattern to use as my base and I’ve about 3 or 4 different sources all out on the table and tons of bra pieces.

So, given that the cup stops with the top and half middle and doesn’t wrap around to the side, do you still feel like it gives you a nice round shape at the sides? Or do you look flatter at the side of the cup around the powerbar spot? On your model, that’s not an issue. I’ve just been observing how many of the sports bras I’ve made do not offer a very flattering look. Either the girls are squished flat to my chest or they lay funny toward my armpit or they look like deflated balloons. I’ve been searching for good patterns that offer a flattering shape. Working with the Shelly Bra from Pin Up Girls as the most likely candidate.

By the way, I LOVED your post on dissecting the sports bra. The one you tore apart is so different from any I own or would purchase. You gave me insight and got my wheels turning! Thank you!!!

    • This bra only use one layer of jersey fabric with no lining so it really doesn’t offer much support or affect the shape. I mainly use this for sleeping. I can see it being used as sports bra though with more stable fabric.
Sports bras are difficult thing indeed! I don’t like compression bra and prefer encapsulated ones like the Panache sports bra that I dissected the other day. Glad that you like the post! Opening it was like opening a present, it is so different that what I thought. I’m still thinking about all the pieces and components of that bra and why they were used. Intriguing. :)
