I’m making another jeans for my husband! This time I want to make him a pair of selvedge jeans using jeans kit that I bought from Citron Jeans. Selvedge jeans has straight outseam that utilizes the selvedge of the fabric. The denim fabric used usually has contrasting color of warp on both edges.
I have made him several jeans for my husband before using Pumila pattern and Kwik Sew 3504. Unfortunately they are not for selvedge jeans. Maybe I should take the opportunity to learn more about drafting a proper selvedge jeans but hey there’s an easier way! So I ordered this jeans pattern from a Japanese pattern shop, Full of Pattern.
Since I didn’t want to just cut into my precious selvedge denim, I made a proper muslin for the jeans. Here they are waiting for my husband to try them on. I’m quite excited with this project and want to take it really slow this time. I love making jeans, it is a big project each time. Not just about the sewing, the topstitching, the rivets, the stitching details, every step is exhilarating!

I’m not sure how to navigate the Japanese site, it looks very interesting, any advice? How do you like the pattern that you bought from there?
I use Google translate extension on Chrome browser to navigate Japanese and other non-English sites. It’s a pretty handy tool! I’ve made several drop crotch pants for my son from Full of Pattern and we quite like them. The patterns are in trend and it’s not easy to find mens and boys pattern that are more than basic stuff.

ooh, selvedge denim jeans! I’ll be so looking forward to reading about what you think of the process (and the pattern) as I have some seriously gorgeous red selvedge blue denim (which looks exactly like those shown in the kits you linked to) that is sitting in the stash… one day they’ll get sewn up
I also really like the cheats muslin zipper – a much faster way of whipping up a pants muslin!
Is your fabric particularly stiff? I’ve washed mine in the hope that it would soften (and to see how the indigo dye handled the water) but no luck. The guy I bought mine from said you have to wear this fabric in – that they’ll eventually soften. Keep us updated!
My fabric is quite stiff as well! The fabric for two men’s jeans that I made before were quite stiff too and they did soften over time. The ones that I made with soft denim are now ripped apart and completely unwearable.
I also didn’t wash them first. I’ve read that in the denim society (if there’s such a thing), it is suggested to wear the jeans for at least 6 months before washing them for the first time! (my husband didn’t do this 😛 )
I love to make Jeans, too. They are such everyday clothes you can directly wear.
I look of the muslin, but I’m curious about the zipper. Does this have a typical fly? I’m not suds if this is a temporary zipper cor the muslin.
It is just a temporary zipper, the final result will have ordinary jeans fly
