Birdie Scout Woven Tee and Corduroy Moss Skirt

Scout woven tee and Moss skirt

After finishing my corset, I yearned for a quick and easy project to refresh myself. Refreshing from one sewing project by making another sewing project? One might wonder if I have no life beside sewing lol.

Anyway I was in Okadaya, a fabric store in Shinjuku, to find some corset supplies when I found this piece of double gauze fabric with cute birds pattern. It was only 70 cm but I bought it anyway, thinking that I could make it into a simple top.

The Scout Woven Tee from Grainline studio has been in my stash for sometime and I think the simple shape is great to show off the bird print. I cut size 0 with no alteration except for shortening it about 5 cm. My fabric is of course not enough for the neckline binding, I used store bought binding in light yellow double-gauze cloth.

It is such an easy and simple pattern with wonderful shape! I can easily see this tee become one of my everyday staple.

What is better to wear with a Scout Woven Tee than the Moss Skirt from Grainline studio? Of course! I bought the Moss skirt PDF pattern rightaway and start cutting into my fabric that afternoon. The fabric is green corduroy, the same one that I used for Sidra’s sarouel pants. I cut size 0, did a little swayback alteration, and lengthened the hem about 5 cm. It was indeed a very mini skirt before lengthening!

As the Scout Woven Tee, the Moss skirt is also an easy and simple pattern. The most difficult part was probably the fly front zipper but I’ve made this several times so it went okay. My skirt also has center back seam on the waistband because I wanted the corduroy grain to stay horizontal on the front.

The next day I went to a park near my house to enjoy the beautiful day with Sidra. I rarely took pictures of my outfit outside because I was shy. How all of you do it? But actually I live in a very wonderful area with lake, park, and woods nearby. I’ve brought my tripod with me but was too shy to set it up taking self-pictures in front of people.

Eventually I asked Sidra to be my photographer that day. He was very excited that he was finally allowed to use the SLR and took hundreds of pictures of me, of flowers, of people, and of dogs. He did a wonderful job although I was too self-conscious to pose. I think I look a little different when other people taking pictures of me than when I took them myself, don’t you think so?

  1. I love your version of the moss! I’ve been working on this pattern also, and I was wondering how you did your swayback adjustment?

  2. As soon as I opened this post I thought “ooh, outside photos!” It’s lovely to see you outside and a little bit of your world. I agree about taking photos. I try to find a quiet place and scurry around with my tripod pretending I’m photographing the scenery until the coast is clear! Your corset was unbelievably good and I totally understand the need for these gorgeous simple pieces. I’m sure you’ll wear them a lot :)

  3. OMG you are so cute! Love the outfit! And totally understand what you mean about sewing something fun and easy after sewing something difficult (or boring). I have just finished sewing striped curtains (with french seams – arghhh) and now I really need to sew something funny πŸ˜‰
And yeah I hate having photos taken of myself but before the curtains I made a top that just HAVE to be seen on so I will have a friend to it tomorrow. Urgh!

    • I can’t stand home decor sewing, all those straight stitching! I would be so tempted to add frills, ruffles, anything, just to get me out of those endless straight stitching. Kudos to you for making curtains, with french seams! :)

  4. Aw, I love seeing the cherry blossoms in your photos. It reminds me of the spring I spent in Japan a few years ago. You chose great fabrics for these patterns – more and more I want to make that Moss mini skirt!

  5. The print is really interesting. Your new photographer has obvious skills. No doubt he was watching as you were taking photos. Great outfit.

  6. I took some time off from writing my dissertation today and made myself a scout tee… such a simple pattern and a great way to showcase patterned fabric. I love your version :o)

  7. Such a great outfit! I downloaded the Moss Skirt pattern last week and have started work on a denim version. Your post makes me want to try the tee pattern too.

    • Thank you Jen! You make the most wonderful pattern! I admit that I didn’t think much before because they look so simple, now I know what I’ve been missing!

  8. love the outfit! every time i see the scout tee come up, it reminds me that i need one! i hear ya about taking pics. mine are all done with the camera self timer. i hate handing the camera over to someone else, i’m so self conscious!

  9. Ooh! I really like your version of the Scout Woven Tee, it’s the pattern you’ve chosen, good selection. And, yes, I feel when others take our photo we do look different. In your case, I see a smiling mom looking with lots of love for Sidra :)

    • Thank you Tilly!
Sidra was so sweet and helpful that day, but also got distracted easily. One moment he was taking pictures of me then suddenly got distracted by something in the grass and took pictures of it instead πŸ˜€

  10. Cute outfit!! I love this on you! Funny, I’ve had the Scout tee cut out in a birdie fabric for a couple of months and haven’t gotten around to sewing it! You’ve inspired me to get cracking on that!

I’m really self-conscious with someone else taking my photos, but I don’t have a remote or a tripod so my husband always takes my pics! Yours look lovely out in the park!

    • Ooh please finish it, then we can have matching birdie tee πŸ˜€
My husband doesn’t mind taking pictures of me. But he is so much taller than me that every pictures of me he took is slightly from above my head and makes me look like a 12 years old… :(

  11. Love these classic, everyday sort of pieces! I just made the Moss mini myself and I just love how simple and wearable it is. That bird print is beautiful, and I bet double gauze makes a super soft and comfy Scout.
I always feel so self-conscious having someone else take my photos! It’s funny that I’m more at ease posing like a weirdo standing alone on a street corner with a self-timer!

    • I admire how you can do that! I remember one of your post where you were taking photos in someone’s driveway. I was so inspired after reading it that I took my tripod and camera out, only to get chickened out and went back straight home posing in front of my blank wall again πŸ˜›
      Maybe I should try again!

  12. I love these two pieces together! I tried out the Scout tee a while back, but it was my first attempt at making sleeves and didn’t go so well. :( I think I just didn’t give it enough patience. This is making me want to try it again!!

And I feel the same way about posing! I prefer to take my project shots with my self-timer and/or camera remote. The photo shoot goes much faster that way!! Even if my husband is not looking, but just in the other room, it makes me nervous. I figure the only way I’ll get over my fear is by practicing a lot, hehehehe. πŸ˜‰

Your son did such a great job on his first attempt. :) I see a little photographer in the works!

    • You should give it another try! It is a wonderful pattern for everyday wardrobe.
I’m actually happy about Sidra’s results, I guess I should practice posing in front of people as well :)
