Pattern
Pin-up Girls Classic Bra #1230 and Merckwaerdigh Mix30

Another new set of bra and panties that I made yesterday. Nothing really special, no frills nor lace as I wanted something simple this time. The fabric is cotton knit by Liberty of London. I need about half yard to make the whole set.

The bra pattern is Pin-up Girls Classic Bra #1230, size 30C. This is a classic full band bra that can be made with or without underwires. I made mine with underwires for better support.

I used to think that I don’t like underwired bra because I’ve never felt comfortable in underwired store-bought bras. It turned out that they are not comfortable because the fit was not right. I never found my size and always bought bra in size 32A or 32B. But since I started to make my own bra, I found out that underwired bras (in the right size) are comfortable!

The panties pattern is based on Merckwaerdigh Mix30 that I’ve used so often. The original pattern has lace inset, I removed it to make a very simple pattern with only two pieces.

I really love how simple they look!

  1. Novita, how did you approach the underwire issue? I tried to order underwire for the Pin Up Bra 1230 pattern (I ordered based on your recommendation), but the underwire was so confusing…how did you pick your underwire? Did you have to place a separate order for it?

The website recommends ordering specifically the Pin Up Bra “Long Underwire” for that pattern, but I haven’t yet received my pattern to measure myself to figure out what size of Long Underwire I would need for the Pin Up Bra pattern.

How did you get around that hurdle? Please let me know!

    • The link for Pin Up Bra 1230 is for the pattern only, you have to order fabrics and notions (including underwires) separately. Fabrics and notions can be bought in Elingeria, Merckwaerdigh, or any other store.

You don’t have to have to measure the pattern to figure out your underwire size, just pick the underwires based on your bra size. You can also compare the underwire from your store-bought bra to the ones from Elingeria. Here’s a PDF file of Elingeria underwires.

If you are still not sure, you can buy an underwire set. It is a set of several pairs of underwires in different size so you can find the most comfortable size. In Elingeria, look here for underwire set.

  2. I was going through your posts on my RSS reader and had to visit your site to say thank you for turning me on to ELingeriA. I’ve been wanting to make panty sets just like this for months and just needed this little push. Your set is super cute, and inspiring. Hope I can get at least one good set made – it’d make me feel much cuter!

  3. I think I may have commented on your lingerie sets before, but they are so lovely. Really, yours have inspired me to try my own. I am around the same size as you and also find underwires so uncomfortable but I can already tell from starting to fit one that my opinion will change!

    • I really encourage you to try! The Pin-up Girls pattern has very good instructions and perfect for familiarizing yourself with the terms. Merckwaerdigh pattern instructions are translated so sometimes they are a bit confusing if you’re not familiar with sewing lingerie.
Sewing lingerie is so much fun and really not as hard as it looks. It is also very addictive though!

  4. SO clever! Gathering the courage to give it a try. Every time i see one of your beautiful sets, i’m a little closer…..Thank you for the inspiration.

  5. Wow, it looks like a store-bought, very neat and professional. Do you plan to offer a tutorial or even a sew-along, please say yes….I really want to learn how to sew it neatly. do you use serger or any basic sewing machine will do?

    • Hi Su, I’ll think about tutorials/sew-along, but I’ve learned a lot from Sigrid’s tutorial blog here. They’re very helpful!
If you want to learn, I really recommend the Pin up Girls pattern for a start as the instructions are very clear.
I don’t have a serger and only use ordinary sewing machine for all my sewing. The stitches used are straight stitch, zigzag stitch, and 3 step zigzag stitch. They’re really not as hard as it looks! :)

  6. What a pretty set. I like to wear cotton knit underwear, but it is hard to find pretty versions. Your lingerie sewing is making me want to try making my own underwear too!
