That’s my beautiful Janome sitting sadly in my sewing room. Because it is broken! (T_T)
I was sewing a pair of jeans for my husband when the needle stopped because of some threads bunching under the plate. I tugged on the fabric to pull it out, then opened the bobbin case to clean it. I’ve done this many times, and usually it solved the problem.
But when I put the bobbin back again and pushed the button to hook the bobbin thread, the thread wouldn’t come out! Tried it manually and still nothing happened. Opened the plate, cleaned it, oiled it, changed the needle, checked the thread, anything that I could think of, but still the bobbin thread won’t come out.
Sometimes we don’t know how dependent we are to a material thing until it is broken. It’s just a sewing machine, but I always feel so depressed whenever there is problem with it. I think I can handle it if it was the stove, the fridge, or maybe my mobile phone, but not the sewing machine. Or the computer. Or the modem. Or the SLR camera.
I sat on the living room feeling all miserable yesterday, Sidra asked me what happened and I told him why. He hugged me and said that the sewing machine would be okay and we only need to have it repaired. If people saw us hugging each other like that, they would think that something really bad had happened to us.
So I guess I have to find something else to do until Saturday, when we’re going to take the sewing machine to the repair shop. Sometimes I miss sewing machines from older days, they were so simple without all the fancy stitches and blinking lights, but they are so much stronger and harder to break down. And even if there were problems, we can usually fix them ourselves because the machine was so simple.
This is the jeans that I’ve been working on when this catastrophe happened. The fabric is another Spring Top sewalong prizes, Indigo denim by Robert Kaufman that I got from Whipstitch fabrics. I was so happy making these jeans because I put rivets on them!
More fabric prizes that I got: Little Folks Voile Diamond Mine by Anna Maria Horner from Fashionable Fabrics (and red lining that I bought), Kaffe fasset shot cotton in Moor from Pink Castle Fabrics, and Robert Kaufman cotton corduroy in Camel from Whipstitch fabrics. So many things to sew…. (loooong sigh).
I just got my machine back from the repair shop (same reason) I feel the same way! While I love my new(ish) machine, I still miss the old clunky one.
Oh I do feel a lot of sympathy for your plight, I don’t think you’re being over-dramatic, no, your sewing machine is how you express all your sewing creativity, you poor thing. I hope your machine is mended extra quick! But in the meantime, what about hand sewing, would that help? Vanessa xxx

I can understand how you’re feeling!! But you can try experimenting other things…hand sewing, crocheting, paper craft, painting, gardening!!

I totally agree. Old machines – simple but sturdy. I have just started doing research on an industrial machine. You should look into this too if they are available over in Japan. You do so much sewing, so an industrial machine sounds perfect for you! Good luck

Offhand I’d say ‘tugging on the fabric’ is what did it – probably bent something down there.. And the original incident, thread bunching under the plate, kind of says adjustment needed to me also. I’ve never had that any longer since I’ve had a better machine (also a Janome :-)). Hopefully you can find a good repair person to take care of both at once. Cheer up ! Your machine will be fine soon. I understand how you feel as I grow to love my sewing machine more and more each day. And what your son did is so loving too.
He’s very sensitive whenever I get sad and always try to cheer me up by doing silly things or showing me stuff 😀
you should try crocheting something. with soft and summery cotton!
when i get threads stuck real bad, i keep a pair of tweezers on hand and try pulling the thread out while manually handcranking it, sometimes that helps. saturday is so close though, good luck!
Ooh! We all feel your pain there. I’m sure the machine just needs a tuneup and will be as good as new.
You can play with other handicrafts in the mean time, you’re so creative! Hand embroidery? Hawaiian quilting? Sachiko? Knitting? I usually find lots to do over the Purl Bee blog. Or maybe you can just relax 😉

Bad things have been happening to me recently but a few days later I realise it was the best thing that could have happened. Like the hand of God comes in and says ‘no, today will be bad and you won’t get what you want because you need to wait for an amazing surprise’.
So maybe see the broken sewing machine as an opportunity to do or learn something else. Turn it into a positive. You never know what might happen
Ahhh I don’t want to think about the day my machine will die. I think I would cry.

I know how you feel! We are away on the road for 6 months and I have a few projects I wanted to finish before I left but they didn’t get done! Sad how I still feel sad about it. I did bring some hand work but nothing compares to a big sewing project. Broken must be terrible. Never mind Saturday will come!
