Yellow corduroy vest and pants

Yellow corduroy vest and pantsI’ve seen so many wonderful projects made with vintage patterns on the net, and finally I had my first one to try! The pattern was bought via etsy, it’s a 1972 McCalls pattern for high-neck shirt, vest, and pants. I made the vest and pants for Sidra.

The fabric is yellow corduroy and the lining is dark purple polyester fabric. It turned out that I didn’t really like the lining fabric, it moved a lot and doesn’t stay in shape. Next time I will be using cotton or silk for the lining.

I didn’t make many changes to the pattern, only adding a pair of slanted pockets to the pants and shortening the legs a bit. The pattern came with instruction sheets which I tried to follow. The back waistband has elastic in it while the front waistband is flat. They were supposed to be sewed after the sides have been stitched together and the back pants pieces are clipped on the waistband area. This part was a bit difficult and I couldn’t do it neatly.

Sidra was really excited when he saw the vest and pants. He said that they looked like fighting costume set. Huh? Yeah… umm, I guess they kinda looked like Dragon Ball‘s clothes (-_-;). He’s a big fan of Dragon Ball, and can spend hours reading the manga, that was why he was really happy with the vest and pants.

Anyway, the most important thing is that he likes them (^_^).

  1. Hehe this is so retro and awesome. Kind of reminds me of Bruce Lee’s yellow tracksuit as well :)

BTW, I linked to your red top you made from Stylish Dress Book pattern, because I am giving away a copy of the book on my blog.

  2. OMG it does look like a dragon ball outfit!! nicely done tho!

talking about kids clothes, have u ever thought of enlarging a kid’s pattern and make it into adult clothes??~ 😛 this thought just came up when i was browsing a very nice kids clothes pattern book 😛 i want to make them for myself!!! I really wonder if that will work~

    • Enlarging a kid’s pattern to adult size is difficult because a child’s body proportion is different than adult’s. What I often do is taking the design elements from kid’s clothes and applying it to my own pattern :)

    • He couldn’t stop moving when I took the pictures, I guess he’s really into his Dragon Ball’s ‘role’! 😀
